BC Beer Awards

The BC Beer Awards & Festival celebrates the very best craft beer brewed in British Columbia.

Last year's SOLD OUT event took place on October 15th at The Croatian Cultural Centre. 30 categories were awarded in the awards ceremony. For the festival we had 60 breweries, 5 cideries, craft artisanal vendors, live music and more! Thank you everyone who attended.

The date for 2017 is Saturday, October 21st. Save the date!

The Judging and Awards

"For this year’s event, a whopping 78 BC breweries submitted an impressive 580 unique beers to be judged against 20 different categories. Over the course of 2 days, judges tasted each of the beers and ranked them on attributes such as aroma, appearance, flavour, mouthfeel and overall impression. Each beer is ranked in its category by a variety of judges to gain consensus on the beer and where it stacks up against the competition. Top categories saw dozens of entries in the tightest race that the BC Beer Awards has ever seen."  Full article and video.

There are now 20 beer categories that were judged and will be awarded this year (including two new categories) at our event. Also, we're excited to announce the inaugural ‘Richards Buell Sutton LLP Rookie of The Year Award for BC’s top new brewery!

At the Festival

The Brewers Challenge this year is Sour Beer. Keg or cask;  just make us pucker! There's been over  30 entries so far so you know that means?!? That's right, you get to try at least 30 sour beers at the festival guaranteed! We’ve invited a handful of BC’s cideries to join in on the festival for your tasting enjoyment too. (Next year they will be part of the judging and awards!) This year's festival is also bigger! We've taken over the whole Croatian Cultural Centre and we have over 60 breweries pouring their craft beer that day.  Rookie Buzz Tent - The BC Craft Brewer's Guild will be hosting a "Buzz Tent" for our BC rookie breweries - they'll be tapping kegs hourly from some of BC's Rookie Breweries who weren't able to attend the event. Beers you've most likely never tried before and may not try again for a while until they are in full production! There will also be artisan craft vendors by artists associated with The Craft Council of BC. This is your chance to get that custom growler holder, that hop necklace or soap made from hops. Lastly, Beer Can Derby. Bring on the fun! For a small donation (to the Food Bank) you can build your own beer can car on site and test it out on their track.

Vine & Hops Wine and Craft Beer Tours will be providing a free shuttle service from Commercial Drive Station to Croatian Cultural Centre for the hour before the event (3.15 - 4.15pm). Pick up location will be at the Skytrain entrance by Safeway on West Broadway going Eastbound (there will be signage). Get Home Safe by the BC Liquor Distribution Branch have supplied us with transit tickets for your ride home. They will be available at the event.

After Party

We're pleased to announce the official BC Beer Awards After Party will take place at Doolin's and The Belmont Bar. They will provide 2 complimentary busses to transport guests to their establishments immediately following the event. Busses will fit roughly 110 guests.  All guests to receive complimentary cover and VIP access with either promotional pass distributed throughout the event or with their event ticket.

The Full Story:

The BC Beer Awards & Festival (BCBA) has become one of the most anticipated beer tasting festivals in the Lower Mainland. We will be returning to the Croatian Cultural Centre (3250 Commercial Drive, Vancouver) again this year as this venue has been the perfect location for our event for the past three years.

Tickets for the BC Beer Awards & Festival will go on sale Wednesday August 26th -  10am at the Early Bird price of $30 via TicketZone BCBeerAwards. On October 1, 2015 tickets will be available for $35 (plus taxes). Last year we sold out during the Early Bird phase so don’t wait!

Last year's BC Beer Awards judging drew over 460 unique entries from over 60 BC breweries and brewpubs, with winners selected in 17 distinct categories. Judges included certified beer judges, cicerones, sommeliers, journalists, as well as noted beer and food lovers. The BC Beer Awards adheres to standards set by the Internationally recognized Beer Judging Certification Program (BJCP).

The mandate of the BC Beer Awards is to reward excellent beers even if not brewed exactly to strict style guidelines. Secondary is ensuring that every beer brewed in BC can be entered regardless of whether it fits in a style or not. Craft Brewers across the province are well-known for their innovation and creativity, something that the BCBA organizers are keen to help celebrate. With 22 new breweries having opened in BC in 2014 and an estimated 20 opening in 2015, we’re set to hit 100 craft breweries in BC this year!

The BC Beer Awards & Festival would not be possible without the generous support of our sponsors. The exclusive media sponsor and sponsor of the People’s Choice Award is CBC Vancouver. This year we also have Tap & Barrel, Richards Buell Sutton LLP Chrislan, Direct Tap, Brew Culture and Hops Connect on board.

A message from our sponsor Richards Buell Sutton LLP:

“We’re delighted to be partnering with the BC Beer Awards to present the inaugural ‘Richards Buell Sutton LLP Rookie of The Year Award’ for BC’s top new brewery. The recent growth and success of BC’s craft beer industry has been exceptional, and is anchored in the time, passion and care that everyone from tasting room staff and brewery owners to brewmasters and brewsters put into what they do, day after day. As craft beer lovers, we love working with BC’s craft brewers, and welcome the opportunity to give back to an industry and a community that we feel so passionately about. The winner of the ‘Richards Buell Sutton LLP Rookie of The Year Award ‘ will be judged on a variety of criteria, the most important of which will be their 2015 BCBA awards tally. In addition to bragging rights, the winner will get the opportunity to work with our team of beer industry lawyers and will receive a comprehensive package of complimentary legal services and advice for their company. Partnering with this year’s winner will be a lot of fun, and we look forward to helping them navigate the unexpected challenges and opportunities they face as they grow their exciting new brewery.” -  Carlos Mendes, Richards Buell Sutton LLP beer industry lawyer

Our charity of choice is the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. All coat check fees will be donated and they will also be collecting non perishable donations at the door.
